Miss PNG TikTok Video: Turn Negativity into Positive Message

A lot has been said about Lucy Maino and a lot has been said about the Pageant. I personally would not judge and make any commentary about a TikTok video that's gone viral. That was a personal account, not an official account that would warrant my critic. I reserve my comments as Lucy is the only one who knows her intentions. To ridicule her of all negativity is one I will not do.

I have worked with these young women as a sponsor and accord them all the same respect.

The simplest of all matters arising is that, we are all human and we make mistakes. Whatever the intention there was when the video was produced is one only Lucy knows. The fact of the matter is, none of what's said about her will break her as a person.

I for one will encourage her to pick up from the damaging remarks and move on. Challenges are great as only the bravest of women withstand such and come out champions. Women especially should encourage our womenfolk to help them get up and take the next step forward. We are not perfect.

Lucy represented PNG in football and well before she became Miss PNG at the tender age of just a teen whilst studying in the States. In 2014, she assisted me with a few of our cultural programs by performing at the Bowes Museum in Los Angeles and at several media events throughout LA.

She was a confident young woman who would dress in her traditional Kairuku costume and dance to the tune of the Kundu drums whom her mother would be beating. At the Museums where we invited hundreds of guests, she would speak confidently about her country Papua New Guinea.

She was already an ambassador before she became Miss PNG. She is outgoing, full of charisma, confident and just been a young woman expressing herself through dance and unfortunately she chose a platform that has so many people attack her.

Public figure or not, we all have a duty to have our own people corrected, guided, assisted and get them back on their feet.

What if this happens to your sister, aunt or daughter, you just don't go all out condemning them, no. These are humans that have minds that react and hearts that bit. Help provide a constructive solution.

For the Pageant, we assist and sponsor all platforms we think should be supported. It's good to see a lot of suggestions from the public. Please do get involved and assist the committee. Do not sit back, wait for a dramatic event to happen then start pouring out suggestions.

I have read a few good suggestions. Do write professionally via email or send a letter to the MPIP committee and offer your assistance.

Like all other platforms, we the sponsors can only do so much to assist. Fallouts are bound to happen.

For my sisters who have commented negatively, I have screenshot your comments, I will suggest to MPIP PNG and all other PNG Platforms we support nationwide to invite you to meet with them so they can take on some of your recommendations. Be involved so you can contribute meaningfully and appropriately and not in this manner as we women must assist each other grow.

For the rest of us, let us not sit around and wait for another issue to pop up and lay down our critics.

Make good use of your laptops and keyboards, write business plans, write novels, write blogs to publish etc. Help our mamas with their bank loan proposal writing.

Lucy, I am a phone call or text away.

Comments, share and critics - viral

Surrounding the comments and critics, here is one that may resonate with many people who saw the Miss PNG viral TikTok video as just a bit of fun...

I saw the video and like you all highly educated people I don’t see anything wrong with it from our perspective but she is representing our country PNG and she needs to respect our culture and our traditions hence respecting our integrity as culture based Papua New Guineans.
Mipla still traim lo adapt lo pasin blo white man and this is a total disgrace to our name as a whole. Yes u can have fun but not like that on social media. Back in the days when I was contesting we held our title with respect. And we expect it to be kept that way as that is the very essence of the quest... that was the spirit of the quest and our culture and tradition shows our true identity to the world as we were representing our country abroad.
I really don’t have a problem with her strutting her stuff on social media but it’s the way she did that makes her less of a PNG woman as her style does not represent PNG [Miss PNG Pacific Island Facebook, name withheld]

Here are popular pros and cons comments about the video. All names have been withheld - to see the full list of trending comments and shares, visit the Miss PNG Pacific Facebook page.

5 PROS (Neutral Comments)

  • I just saw the video, I don't see anything wrong, she has the right to post whatever video she wants too. She is wearing her clothes, fully covered and twerking.
  • Given her performance from the pageant, I think she loves to perform but I think there are proper and more sophisticated ways to do so. Sorry tru girl this is when you will be bombarded with haters.
  • Cyber bullying does nothing, except please the ego. But relinquishing support of her at this time is just as bad as vilifying her! I'm sad that our women are held to such high (unrealistic at times) standards. If she were a man ... ?
  • I remember a time when it was a crime for Miss PNGs to have boyfriends and unladylike to wear jeans. Now it's open season for twerking videos in shorts... Pfffft, oh how times have changed, "standards" have dropped... Lol... Keep em coming tho, we have a ton of perverts out there ready to ogling over Instagram, Facebook, Tiktok and whatever other social media...
  • It doesn't just apply to Ms PNG only but any Papua New Guinea that represents the country on such platforms. Your integrity is a priority, protect it.

5 CONS (Against/critical Comments)

  • At this time, when the world is faced with a pandemic, we expect ambassadors like her to be at the forefront, use her platform which is the right time now to do the humanitarian work we expect of her and her committee.
  • It's a very sensitive time and doing a TikTok video is the last thing we expect to see.
  • Thank you tru. It’s not wrong to have fun but the time she posted this video is uncalled for especially when she is still the current Miss PNG. She is an ambassador to this country and we Papua New Guineans expect something better from her than this.
  • Being an Ambassador, there would be better things to do and at a time when lending a hand at humanitarian efforts would be more suitable given your title.
  • This is a disgrace!!! You should make good use of your TikTok account by doing awareness etc.. This is unacceptable!!!!
